Volunteers
You will have heard the phrase 'many hands make light work'. At German Shepherd Rescue Scotland we need your help, not to make the 'work light' but to give us the chance to help as many German Shepherds as we can. The more volunteers we have the more help we can offer.
What can I do to help?
Home-checks
This will involve visiting potential families at their home address. At this time you would explain to them how German Shepherd Rescue Scotland works, discuss with them their choice of dog, and assess their suitability for the available dogs. As you would expect this is really only for the experienced and all volunteers who offer to help in this area will be assessed.
Assessing Dogs
This will involve visiting families who, for whatever reason, find themselves in a position that they need to re-home their dog. Obviously this will be an emotional time for the family so it is important that volunteers are sensitive to the situation. Volunteers will complete an assessment form which is designed to get as much information as possible about a dog, this information helps us decide what type of new home would be best. Meeting a dog is an important part of the assessment process, the information a volunteer gains from a visit can be invaluable.
Transport
Could you help by collecting a dog from its owner or delivering a dog to its new owners or fosterers? Anyone willing to do some driving is always welcome. Often, if there is some distance to take a dog, we work where possible in relays, cutting down the amount of driving any one of us has to do by each taking the dog just a part of the route.
Fostering
Fosterers are very much needed to care for dogs in a homely environment while their new homes and prospective owners are home-checked. During this time the dog can be assessed and relevant information, can be used to help decide on the most suitable placement. This information can also passed on to their new owners to help them adjust and prepare for their new dog. Fostering can be very satisfying as your experience, insight and input is important in finding the best home and family for the right dog.
Fund Raising
We rely entirely on donations and fund raising to cover all of our cost. Many of the dogs that come into our hands have suffered abuse or neglect and often expensive veterinary treatment is required. All monies raised are used to help rescue and re-home unwanted GSD's. German Shepherd Rescue Scotland is a non-profit making registered company (Registered Company Number No 339396) and volunteers are not paid.
You don't even need German Shepherd experience to help with fundraising!
In all aspects of our work which deal directly with dogs and their owners, some experience with German Shepherds is necessary although much can be learned while actually helping out. Volunteers are assessed to ensure suitability and to help the new volunteer to join in at an appropriate level of skill.
If you can help us please send your details by completing the form below. We would love to hear from you.
